Been attending games at WIU for 30 plus years and first time I can ever remember us winning on a last second shot. We've tied before to send to OT and have lost a few at the buzzer, but first time I can ever remember winning ! But I will have to drive thru the Union parking lot to check out the new flag poles!

The Leatherneck Club social at the Sports Corner was very nice. Those Chicago-style hot dogs were good! And the beer was very cold!

This was the 2nd post-game social downtown. The first one was after the Eastern Illinois game. So both socials came after victories!

If we will be utilizing the 1950 west side of Hanson Field for the next few years, it will need lots of repairs over the summer. The old wooden bleachers in Sections A, B, F, and G are badly splintered. The concrete aisles are crumbling away. Something has to be done to fix this place up. The first step would be a big coat of Purple paint to replace that sandstone color.

Now back to basketball: We should be hearing soon who our opponent will be for the Feb 18 Bracket Busters game. Since the focus seems to be on "geography", my best guess would be Bradley.

Here is the winning shot from Saturday's game as it was broadcast on WIUS-FM:

<a href="http://chirb.it/rD61JM" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://chirb.it/rD61JM

RE: The IUPUI Games

Neckfansince71,
Great meeting you last night, wasn't able to make my over to the Leatherneck Club social until after you left.

RE: The IUPUI Games

712,

You are absolutely a "details" man who could really help the athletic department with some of these special events.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game also. Would really like to see the kids get more into the game than they did. Of course that takes time and some training as funny as that may sound. Big crowd, I am going to say probably more than the listed attendance because of the number of people that were coming in with canned goods and the inability to keep track of them all. Hopefully the students will be better organized as time goes on so that when it comes time for the bracket buster game next year, they can show the purple and gold side of WIU pride!

IUPUI was very well coached, very athletic, and caused all sorts of problems the first two minutes and a couple of times with the press. I just so happened to park in the Leatherneck Club parking area too, and when I came out after the game, a gentleman with a suitcase was getting into his car next to mine. I thought, gotta be a referee! It was! He thought the game was well played, both coaches as far as he was concerned were class, both teams well coached, and yes, dunking during warm-ups was what resulted in the technical foul. He also said that the out of bounds play at .5 seconds where the player took a fall trying to pick up a cheap foul was an acting job all the way and Mo had told them to watch for it.

One more thing! I drove through campus one more time this morning. Stopped to look at the Corbin Olson work which is coming along and really going to be a class setup. Then I took two shots of Hanson with my cell phone! One with the new turf and the eastside, and then one with the new turf and westside and low and behold the three new flag poles which fit nicely into that semi-circular area at the south end. I have to agree with 712 that the westside really looks drab, small, and antiquated. The eastside is really outstanding and will look even better with the new scoreboard this coming year. The old west side just looks like its the wrong scale for the Hanson of the 21st century. Glad most incoming students don't really get a good look at it when the walk by since it is on the westside.

Once again, a great night for the Leatherneck faithful!

RE: The IUPUI Games

Here is a highlight mix I put together on the Remy game winner.

http://chirb.it/r406vE

RE: The IUPUI Games

The one home game I miss all year... wow

RE: The IUPUI Games

Western Athletics posted a longer version (2:08) of the final 4 seconds:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8QhjgMAOZ8&feature=digest_sun" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8QhjgMAOZ8&feature=digest_sun

This was the 2nd game where we saw a sizeable group of fans sitting in the north balcony. The Eastern IL game was the other one.

The crowd of 1,900 was the largest crowd since the Indiana game in 2005.

The crowd was into the game. However, I would like to see/hear more enthusiasm coming from our season ticket sections (C, D, and E on the north side and K on the south). Seems like the older fans tend to just watch the game instead of really being a part of the game.

We had a sizeable group of adult fans in Section F who were not afraid to make noise: yell, scream, clap, stomp the bleachers, etc.

I do have one suggestion for next year's "Summit League Food Fight Night": There should be a table set up in the main lobby where people would drop off their food donations (and receive their free general admission ticket).

I was in the main lobby between the games (6:30PM). People were coming in with sacks of food, but there was no signage indicating where they were to go. And no one from Athletics was out there to give direction. So these people had to wander around to find the drop-off location.

No doubt, some of those people were attending their first Western game in years. Having a food drop-off table in the main lobby would make a lot of sense. Let's do it!

RE: The IUPUI Games

As for the "pre-game" technical. It was in their 10:30PM sports report.

What a game! If this doesn't spark interest in this team, I just don't know what will.

Put on me lucky "old school" Leatherneck sweatshirt. Headed towards Western Hall. I figured attendance would be pretty good, so I left early. And even then, parking was hard to come by. The Morgan Hall parking lot was full (which is where I usually park). The area that used to be part of the Leatherneck Club parking area was also fulled up. So I actually broke out my Leatherneck Club parking pass (which I rarely use since I like to walk) and parked with my hoity-toity friends.

Attendance was pretty good, indeed. Most of the sections seemed mostly filled. Though there didn't seem to be many in the balcony behind me. And the pep band was there! Yay! They sounded great. Well, except for some old guy playing the trombone there on the end of the row, trying to keep up with those youngsters.

Crowd was pretty much into it. Well, except my season ticket holder section. I tried to get them going many a time. But it's always an uphill battle for some reason.

Got to meet and briefly chat with Mr. Lawson at halftime. Amazingly he wasn't out of breath from all his trombone playing for an entire half of a game. No, he was very nice and it was very nice meeting you, sir. And thanks too for all you do for this board.

Of course the ending was fantastic. Once that final shot went off, it seemingly hung in the air for an eternity. It looked spot on where I was sitting .. but I've also felt that before and see the ball go "CLANK!" off the rim. Not this time! Though I was a bit worried when the ref's started talking -- I knew the basket was good, but felt they would find some way to put an extra second or two on the clock for IUPUI. Glad I was wrong and they only put .5 on it. Still I always worry about some sort of phantom foul the ref's would call at the end -- glad I was mistaken about that too.

A great night of basketball! Can't get much better than that. Congrats to Mo and the team! I know it's a night of basketball I'll remember for quite some time. If nothing else, for that technical foul before the game even started -- I've never *ever* seen that happen before. Anyone know what the call was? A dunk or something in the pregame warmups?
And of course I'll remember it for that game winning shot. What a night at Western Hall.

Joe C.

RE: The IUPUI Games
WIU712 (1/28/2012)
Why was there only 5 seconds of video???

We missed the crowd's reaction and the player's celebrating.

Western Video Prodution needs to post a longer version of this.
My guess is that they were scrambling to get something online as quickly as possible. I do think a lot of students were gone to SIU tonight. What a great win in front of a big crowd, seats should start to fill in nicely! Cc3 had one HECK of a game, I'd have to agree with month wouldn't trade him for any other player. 20 pts 8 boards 9 assists 2 steals and a block.

And I wouldn't be surprised if remy's shot makes sportscenter top 10!

RE: The IUPUI Games

What. Never forget when UCLA was upset by HOuston in the Astro-dome, the game was not televised live but replayed after. I was a sophomore in high school at that point and just loved the game. UCLA had a left-handed T bone shooter called Lynn Shackleford along with Lew A! Just a magical time. If tomorrows crowd is big, the same thing will happen! I really think there is going to be a big crowd! My wife and I were just talking about how much fun it was in the early 70's to go to Western football games. Being a part of the crowd of 19880 at Hanson is something I will never ever forget. The hillside at the south end was filled with people!

My daughter received a text from the university about the game even though she graduated in 2009, so they are really getting after it.

Seal, thanks for the pics of the Chantileer facility. Fans who donate a canned food item will receive free admission to the Leathernecks' games against IUPUI.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, is a Summit League-wide food drive initiative tied in with Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) and organized by The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at each institution. All food donated during the January 28th games at Western Hall will go to the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) in Macomb.

"The Food Fight is a great way for the student-athletes to give back to their local communities ," said Lisa Melz-Jennings , Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Services/Senior Woman Administrator and advisor of Western's SAAC. "I know that Western Illinois student-athletes realize how very fortunate they are and that they like to do what they can for those in need. The Western Illinois Regional Council is also very appreciative of the work that the student-athletes do and the generosity of the Macomb community."

Last season, Western raised awareness to help stop hunger on Food Fight Night by collecting 1,019 pounds of food and participating in the WIRC Food Pantry. That number was up from 545 pounds raised in 2010.

Back in November, a total of 10 men's games and 10 women's games were selected with each school having exactly one week to collect food and/or cash donations and two weeks if the date features both a men's and women's basketball game. At the end of the Food Fight schedule, the school that raises the most amount of food, measured in pounds, will be deemed the winner and receive The Summit League Food Fight trophy.

The Summit League and its member schools raised a combined total equivalent of more than 74,000 pounds of food in the first three years of the program. Last season, the 10 league members combined to collect the equivalent of over 39,700 pounds, almost doubling the total of 20,500 pounds the previous year. In addition, seven schools surpassed the 1,000-pound mark in donations.

The Summit League introduced a program called "FLIP THE FOOD FIGHT" last year where the league sent a Flip Video camera to conference schools to record all activities for the Food Fight. The initiative promoted the great efforts done by each school's SAAC during the Food Fight campaign.

2011-12 Summit League "Food Fight" Schedule:

Nov. 19 - St. Francis (N.Y.) at IUPUI (Women)

Nov. 20 - Eastern Michigan at IUPUI (Men)

Jan. 14 - South Dakota at North Dakota State (Men/Women)

Jan. 28 - IUPUI at Western Illinois (Men/Women); South Dakota at Southern Utah (Men/Women); North Dakota State at Oakland (Women)

Feb. 4 - Southern Utah at South Dakota State (Men/Women)

Feb. 9 - South Dakota State at South Dakota (Men)

Feb. 11 - South Dakota State at UMKC (Men/Women); Western Illinois at Oral Roberts (Men/Women); IPFW at Oakland (Men)

Feb. 13 - South Dakota State at South Dakota (Women)

The IUPUI Games

Hey Leatherneck Fans!

Saturday's double-header with IUPUI will be part of the Summit League "Food Fight Night".

The Summit League will again designate 20 "Food Fight" games during the basketball season as part of a league-wide food drive, now in its fourth year.
